This happened when I was on my way back to my dad’s house. I decided to visit him and spend a few days at his place to keep him and my younger brother company for a few days before I return to my own life in Lagos.
I left Lagos state in the afternoon, around 2pm, the rain just stopped falling heavily, but it was still drizzling, which was a welcome atmosphere for me. It was a moment I enjoy to the blistering sun that doesn’t mind turning your skin shade darker, with its hot and intense heat.
I boarded a public transport some minutes after leaving a friend’s place. The journey was smooth and peaceful, but due to the fact that I was already tired, I slept sonorously like someone that doesn’t have a care in the world. I hope I am not the only one that sleeps in a public transport.
We later got to our destination and I was startled awake by the driver giving us ‘the loud signal’ to exit the public transport. I got down and walked on the paved footpath alongside the road to the bridge, in order to cross to the other side. I got down on the other side of the bridge, moving through the bodily traffic with care, trying my best not to step on the toes of others passing by.
I located another public transport that will transport me to my hometown.
This is where the story gets interesting.
I was now fully awake, my slumber in the first public transport has made me both alert and refreshed. So, I took out my android phone and opened my eBook reader and adjusting my posture on the seat, I started reading a fantasy book from the page I stopped reading it hours before my departure.
We were almost in my hometown when we all noticed that there was traffic on the two way road we were passing, the bus was now slow-moving at this point, but we later got to the site of the accident, it was strange and unusual. Two public bus collided with each other and both fell into the river flowing under the bridge that we were passing over and these two buses were filled with innocent individuals on their way to different destinations.
I was in a foul mood because of some things in my life that was not going according to plan, but the moment I witnessed what happened and ask more about the incident from those that were living close to the place, the more I give thanks for being alive and having hope for a better tomorrow.
No traces of both buses can be seen by any onlookers, only the witness knew what happened, how it started and how it sunk deep into the flowing river and left no traces of the innocent lives it has just snuffed out and swallowed whole.
We all travel day by day, we are safe, protected by unseen hands and you are not thankful. Cultivate the habit of being thankful to your maker today.
In God’s love,
